Unfortunately, due to matters out of our control, Westival 2020 must be postponed. Westival 2021 will now take place on 22 - 26 JULY.

We are devastated, as this year was set to be by far the biggest to date. Some investments for the festival this summer will be lost, alongside the opportunity of generating any revenue from other events due to COVID-19. This brings financial uncertainty for the near future. However, we’ve spent the last few years building a solid brand and reputation, with a fantastic crowd that really makes Westival what it is.

The intimate, friendly atmosphere created each year is why we’re so invested in the festival’s future. Westival is an independent, grass roots festival, bringing world class music to the heart of Pembrokeshire, whilst striving to be as environmentally friendly as possible, and supporting as many local businesses as we can. Our ethos around quality music, the environment, and a community vibe will never change. We’re still more passionate than ever to put on the party we had planned, but to kickstart momentum for next year we need your help.

If you believe in what we stand for, and want to support the return of Westival next year, please take a look at the donation options below. No matter which one you choose, it is guaranteed to take us one step closer to next year.  This festival has always been about you, the people,  and we could not continue without your ongoing loyalty, so big love.

Music Venue Trust represents 670 independent UK music venues right across the UK and as a result of the current ‘lockdown’ and social distancing policies the prospects for many are grim.

A lot of grassroots music venues are already operating on very thin margins and since these restrictions came in only 17% of them, equating to just 114, are currently secure for the next eight weeks.

The other 556 are at imminent risk of being permanently closed down.

The situation is dire, and it is now incumbent on music fans and the wider industry to do something about it.

Put bluntly, without these venues the opportunities for artists and audiences to connect in a meaningful way at a local level will simply disappear in a lot of cases.

And if they go they will never come back.

Please help us to help grassroots music venues to survive this unprecedented threat to their existence.

Please help us to #saveourvenues

JUKEBOX COLLECTIVE

Through our unique collaborative approach, we use the universal narrative of dance to empower, connect and transcend barriers.

We align our community work with our agency to ensure a vibrant, inclusive, relevant creative culture.

COVID-19 is having unprecedented consequences for some of the most marginalised communities in Wales. The future is uncertain: our programmes have been cancelled; our income decimated and our communities’ well-being is jeopardised.

We play a critical role in supporting the wellbeing and health of BAME communities and families from lower socio-economic backgrounds who are particularly vulnerable to this disease. To date 35% of patients are non-white, nearly triple the 13% proportion in the UK population as a whole. It’s imperative we continue to help local communities during and after the pandemic.

Lockdown has meant all physical classes have been cancelled and social distancing measures have meant young people are unable to see friends, impacting greatly on their social skills and mental health. When the pandemic forced everyone into their homes we decided to deliver FREE online classes to help support young people through this uncertain time. In the last 6 weeks, we’ve reached over 1,200 students through Zoom and IG Lives – bringing dance into their homes and connecting them back up with their friends and dance family!

COVID-19 has had a significant impact on our income streams. We’re hoping to raise £6,000 to enable us to continue with our online activities. By donating to our Crowdfunding Campaign you’d be helping in two ways. By raising the £6,000 necessary we’d be able to keep our FREE online classes going - helping our young people to stay physically active and helping protect their mental health and well-being! And you’d be helping us to keep employing the Creative Freelancers and Dance Tutors.

Help us keep our classes free and continue our important work by supporting us with a donation today.

STAND UP TO RACISM CARDIFF

Cardiff branch of Stand up to Racism - the national anti-racism campaign.

A racist offensive is sweeping Europe, with governments and the right-wing media using migrants, refugees and Muslims as scapegoats for an economic crisis and wars they did not create.

The racist tide will only be driven back by anti- racists standing up and confronting it. From Germany to Greece to the USA, people who want a society free from racism are saying no more. People are taking to the streets in large numbers to oppose racism, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism and to say migrants and refugees are welcome here.

Unity is our strength so we cannot let racism divide us.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has created a very uncertain landscape for millions of small businesses, including the likes of many independent Live Music Venues and Art Spaces across the UK.

These spaces are incredibly important to those beginning to craft their trade, be it as a musician, an engineer, a journalist, a member of production crew... the list goes on.

Without these spaces, the next generation of fresh talent has nowhere to cut their teeth, begin their creative journeys and pursue a career in the creative industries.

We're asking you to chip in to help us pay our bills and secure our staff's income to make sure they can pay their bills too. The physical and mental wellbeing of our staff is very important to us and we completely understand that they have needs during these times as much as anyone else does. We've even set up some fun rewards to give back to those who can help us during this time.

If you would like to purchase a voucher that would get you a drink later and Budweiser will double your donation please click here - https://bit.ly/SPL-LePub

We at Le Pub thrive ourselves in the live bands that we book, the community we have built and the groundbreakingly unique Vegan Junk Food that we offer day in, day out.

Le Pub is not just a venue on Newport's High Street. It is a place for all to feel accepted and respected. For 20+ years, the spirit of Le Pub has survived in varying physical forms but it has lived on through you, our family and friends. Thank you for your continued support.

Please note: all items selected for delivery will be posted later in the year. We aim to have these posted to you by October the 1st.

We are a small grass-roots organisation of volunteers functioning under l’Auberge des Migrants. Our aim is to distribute ingredients and cooking equipment in order to provide displaced people with the means to cook hot nutritious meals.

Currently in the North of France there are over 2,000 displaced people sleeping in makeshift camps and living in unsafe conditions without proper facilities.

Without a stable home, room to quarantine, or adequate access to hygiene and healthcare, the fear and risk of Covid-19 is amplified massively. Unfortunately, due to the outbreaks, many of the organisations previously working on the ground to support the communities here have had to make the difficult decision to suspend or radically reduce services.

Screen Shot 2020-05-24 at 17.14.32.png

might be a long shot, but I'm skint as lint, and coronavirus is affecting some of the ways I'd usually get money in a bind - streets will soon be too dead to busk and gigs are getting cancelled left and right.

If you've ever enjoyed any of my music or been affected by it , please feel free to help support me in making more of it - I'm trying to finish two albums at the moment.

I know it's not going to be an easy time for anyone but any amount would help a lot. I'll write you a song on a theme of your choice. cheers

The Moon is a small, grassroots, not for profit music venue on Womanby Street in Cardiff.

We're one of the few remaining small dedicated music venues in Cardiff, but unfortunately we need to be closed for a significant period during the COVID-19 pandemic. We have a lot of costs to cover that don't stop while we're closed.

It's vital that we still have a venue to reopen when the situation has settled, and that we can continue offering a wide programme of original live music.

Donations will also help us support our staff during these difficult times.

Any support you can give at all will help keep live music alive in Cardiff!

We’ve now been closed since March 14 due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Since the government has announced their support for businesses, we’ve decided to use this campaign as an opportunity to support those freelance and self-employed that we work with regularly that are not in such a stable position at the moment. These include sound technicians, DJs, show reps and photographers, and with Clwb being closed, these people are missing out on income they depend on.

These people are an integral part of our business and community and the clocks at Clwb would cease to tick without them.

So please, if you’re in a position to help please do so by donating or purchasing one of the rewards.

We come with a plea to anyone who has supported us in the past, anyone who has enjoyed a gig, sang along to songs, worn a t-shirt, been a part of our journey in any way. We’re at a pretty crucial time in our career: we’re midway through making our debut record. It’s impossible to express what we’ve put into this album ourselves: years of writing, countless hours of studio time, and months and months of obsessing over each excruciating detail. We have lived the making of this album for the last 6 months, and we feel incredibly attached to it.

As things stand, we haven’t got enough money to carry on working on it. This is incredibly frustrating, as we’re so close to finishing it. Without extra funding, and with the prospect of all our gigs being cancelled for the indefinite future due to the corona outbreak, we have no means of saving money to continue making it. The above target would go a long way to cover the estimated studio time we’d need to finish recording: we reckon we’d need another seven days in the studio for recording and mixing.

Obviously times are hard for everyone, but we’d be immensely grateful even for the smallest of donations. We have a few treats for people who are able to make donations, details of which you can find on our Go Fund Me Page. More T-Shirts and 7” vinyls are also on their way, so if you’d like to buy them up when they’re available this would also be amazing.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, we appreciate every penny. You won’t regret it when you hear what we’ve been doing.

Love,

Rhys, Billy, Tom and Kieran.

Wow, so this morning we launched ‘Songs For The National Health Service’, a collaborative LP featuring an incredible group of artists that have donated previously unreleased demos, covers, remixes and live tracks with all profits being used to directly fund the purchase and distribution of reusable PPE Respirators to protect key workers during Covid-19 and beyond.

Just wanted to take a moment to update you on the ’Songs For The National Health Service’ record. The initial aim was to fund enough ‘PAPR’ (Powered Air Purifying Respirators) to help fully stock Lewisham Greenwich NHS Trust (site of the UK’s first patient with confirmed Covid-19 infection), Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust and University Hospital Crosshouse, Scotland. Incredibly, this target was achieved in about 48 hours.

We’ve now sent the first load of cash across to Dr Natalie Watson and procurement is underway. The next aim is to continue rolling this out to more hospitals over the next couple of weeks. Once again, I wanted to say a big ‘thanks’ to everyone who’s been involved, especially Fred and Terry, all the artists and everyone who’s pre-ordered a copy so far! If you haven’t, head to the link below and grab a copy before we close the campaign up next week.

We are Prom Queen Social Club, girls skate group based in Cardiff. We throw skate parties and put on events for skater and roller girls to meet up and get shredding!

We started our monthly parties at our home, Spit & Sawdust Cardiff, in June 2018 and in the past year we have had over 200 girls come join us at our events, and teaching over 60 girls how to skate for the very first time.

Since then we built a supportive and fun community for girls ages 6-40 to get inspired and creat friendships through skating, no matter the level of ability or age. We've gone on trips to London, Bristol and Swansea to meet other girls and skate new parks and we're always looking to get out and skate more.

We've had the most amazing support from the likes of Vans, Santa Cruz, Shiner, Stance, Red Bull all helping to celebrate women in skateboarding. We've also had features in Metro, Refinery29 and BBC Sport alongside our sisters from other skate groups around the country.

If you want to know more about us, pop over to our instagram @promqueensc

Ladies of Rage is a Cardiff based platform for womxn working in genres where womxn are historically underrepresented i.e. hip hop, grime, drum’n’bass and other electronic genres. We’re open to rappers, singers, musicians, poets, producers, journalists, photographers, videographers – and pretty much anyone who wants to learn any of these skills and take their first step into the music industry.

We hold monthly jam sessions with open mic and decks for cyphers and performances, including spoken word breakdowns. These sessions are held in a local recording studio every last Friday of the month. We also run daytime sessions every other month where mothers are welcome to bring their children along, to ensure that nobody misses out due to childcare.

Ladies of Rage also platforms artists with quarterly showcase events, mixing live music, spoken word and DJ sets entirely by local womxn.

We have a private Facebook group for womxn only where you can discuss any music-related ideas or issues, look for collaborations or just find out more about what we’re getting up to:

This year we will be expanding by working with local organisations to boost the profile of our artists and attendees, as well as working alongside local charities working with vulnerable women. We will also be running workshops for various skills e.g. mixing, production, performance and how to write your first rap!

SZWÉ

Singer Songwriter from Cwmbran, South Wales.

To be black in this day and age, is to understand that social media is the only protection we have. We will record our police stops, we will record black strangers who have been stopped for no reason, other than their blackness, to make sure that the police don’t try to kill another one of us, incarcerate another one of us, humiliate another one of us or take the breath out of our lungs once more.

For too long, I have been quiet about racism as a topic and as discussed in my song, I feel as if my country has too. Our PM has described black people as having “Watermelon Smiles”. Our secondary schools are playgrounds for racism to fester and pass off as “banter”.

America’s President continues to favour White American lives over Black American Lives. 99% of murders involving police shootings between 2013-2019 resulted in NO ACTION being carried against the officer.

Here is a song I wrote. All views are my own.

Where there is NO justice, there will be NO peace.

Twin sisters, against sexual violence activists, campaigners, and advocates. Currently raising funds to fight a gagging order bought by their alleged attacker in the High Court.

In August 2017 we were sexually assaulted on the same night by the same man. The man who assaulted us is now trying to silence us with a gagging order in the High Court, citing misuse of private information and harassment, after we spoke out about our experience at the encouragement of the police.

We fear that if we cannot obtain the necessary funds to cover our legal fees, we would be banned from talking about the abuse we suffered at his hands forever. Please contribute now and share this page with your friends, family and on social media.

The precedent this case could set is huge and is far greater than ourselves.

If our abuser were to be successful, this would have implications for many others and allow for rapists to bring similar cases against their victims.

We cannot allow this to happen, especially as large numbers of victims are finally having the strength to come forward following the #MeToo movement.

We are looking to raise funds so that we can fund our legal representation. We desperately need to raise this so that we do not have to face our abuser alone.  After we reach this initial target, we need to raise as much as possible to successfully fight the injunction our abuser is attempting to place on us. We will be waiving our right to anonymity so that we can crowd fund for our defence team.

Please contribute anything that you are able and share this page now!

Hello everyone! Hope you're all doing well, and keeping safe during this time.

I am happy to say that I am still taking bookings for Weddings in 2021 & 2022, and honestly can't thank you all enough for all the support. So if you know of anyone organising their big day, just send them my website.

I am also keeping dates aside for my current 2020 brides & grooms, for them to move their date with no extra fee if they decide to postpone. But hopefully they will allow weddings again this year.

There's obviously a lot of uncertainty of when I will be able to start doing shoots again, as at the moment I am limiting my car journeys to just essential travel, so will be moving all my family shoots booked in Cardiff & Carmarthen to later in the year, when permitted.

Sadly as a side effect of COVID-19, I have lost over 50% of my 2020 earnings, and as someone who isn't eligible for the self-employed grant, every booking counts, and I am so grateful for all of you for spreading the word. It is honestly what keeps my business going.

Can't wait to see you all again in person -

lots of love, Mary x

We started Shelflife Books and Zines in December 2019 as a pop-up inside our friend's beer and record shop, Pop'n'Hops. Since our first day, we've focused on making space for marginalised voices, stocking books from independent, micro- and self- publishers. You might think we're daft to start a specialist, not-for-profit bookshop in the digital age but we think now is the best possible time - our communities need bolstering, understanding and safe place to have their voice heard more than ever. If you need a recommendation or would like us to order a book for you, please get in touch.

We also do pop-up book stalls at events so let us know if you'd like us to come to you!

Heads Above The Waves is a not-for-profit organisation that raises awareness of self-harm in young people, promoting creative and positive ways of dealing with the bad days.

We talk openly about self-harm and depression.
We sell merch with a message behind the designs.
We run workshops to give people the chance to find what works for them.
We create content to let people know that hope and help exist.

Why do we do it? Because we've been there ourselves, and we've come out the other side. You're not alone.

Wanna make someone’s day? Know someone who’s feeling a bit low and could do with a pick me up? Then have we got the thing for you!

We’ve created these care packages for you to send to someone you care about. They’re packed full of stuff to help with self-care:

  • A big slice of soap from Lush

  • 20g pouch of Moondrop Dreams Tea from Bird & Blend Tea Co.

  • Bag of seeds

  • Mindful colouring book

  • A big roll of Love Hearts sweets

  • A ‘Love Yourself’ patch

  • A ‘Too Rad to Stay Sad’ patch

  • A bunch of HATW postcards full of posi messages

You can also add another item from our store to your order and we’ll package it all up together.

We can either send this directly to the person you want to surprise, or we can send it to you for you to add any extra personal touches! If you want to send it to someone else, pop their details in the shipping address at checkout. If there’s a special message you’d like us to include with it too, add it in the additional notes at checkout, and we’ll make sure it’s included when we ship it!

These days Maggie’s Exotic Foods operates from The Red Lion in the village of Penygroes, surrounded by the beautiful Snowdonia countryside with its rich heritage and culture. Its roots however are deep in African soil, passed down through generations of instinctive, but highly gifted culinary masters; cooks they called themselves.

The shift began from one part of Africa to another, then on to Europe, where Maggie’s mother studied for a City & Guilds qualification in catering, grounding her knowledge and skill and opening up the way for a new generation.

Maggie is passionate about food and cooking as well as being committed to quality and the support of local providers.

Maggie’s influences flow from her Mam and Nain (Mum and GrandMum in Welsh). They are extended through contact with and work in environments with West Indian, Caribbean, Indian, Italian, Mediterranean and Latino foods. They continue to grow and meld with an additional Welsh touch added to the mix, widening Maggie’s international scope to tantalise a range of taste buds.

Maggie’s qualifications, like those of her Mum, stem not only from natural talent, but are informed by a time of studies at Birmingham College of Food, Tourism and Creative Studies under the experienced guidance of its excellent chefs.

GeetLush is a creative and therapeutic artist, based in Pontypridd.

Handcrafting jewellery, trinkets and interiors in such a stative and abstract way, allows for her feminist attitude to shine though her work.

Recently, GeetLush has sold bold jewellery pieces where a percentage of profits are donated to the NHS charity and COVID-19 fund.

Although the therapeutic workshops are on hold, GeetLush’s website is full of wonderful, one-of-a-kind pieces.

Make it compulsory for Black and POC UK histories to be taught in the Welsh education curriculum.

Britain -including Wales- benefited from colonialism and slavery for centuries. This needs to be represented in the curriculum.

The British Empire has often been glamorised and the global impact of Britain’s colonialism downplayed. This has been reflected in the content taught.

There needs to be real and significant change. The legacies of slavery and colonialism have very real impacts on BAME communities across Britain today, and the Welsh education system needs to recognise this.

10 years ago I moved to China to start my first degree in Biological Oceanography. My first year in China was amazing. I absolutely loved the culture and sightseeing.Unfortunately, the weather, the food and the environment, in general, did not agree with me. I already suffer from dry, sensitive, acne-prone skin. The environment in which I was exposed to made it worse. Like any other person suffering from acne-prone skin or simply wants a good facial moisturiser, I started searching. To my surprise and it was indeed a surprise everywhere I went they will offer me the same thing and that was 每白 (mei bai).

Mei bai translates to beautifully white. Every single store in China was advertising this cream, especially to dark skin girls. To them, my issue wasn’t my bumps and spots, but my problem was the colour of my skin. Cray cray right? Mei bai is a bleaching cream that whitens the skin. The cream dried out my skin, even more, made my bumps and spots even worse. Now I know some of you might ask, why in the world would you ever put bleach on your skin? My answer is I don’t know but here’s how I felt. When you are subjected to discrimination and you are made to feel like the ugliest and stupidest person on the planet, you will do the extreme to be accepted. The sad part is, there are a lot of people out there who uses such products and cannot see that it is extreme.

Because society and environment they are subjected to have made such practices seem normal. When in reality it is not. So yes I bleached my skin because I didn’t want to be dark anymore. Dark skin didn’t only mean that I was ugly and stupid. It also meant that I couldn’t get a part-time job, I couldn’t dance on stage anymore because they will hire only Caucasians or very light skin girls, I couldn’t find a husband because that is what I was told and that is what other Chinese girls will mention. If you’re whiter you will easily find a husband. It’s funny how a society can make you doubt yourself and this kind of mentally exist everywhere around the world not only China.

It came to a point when I said enough is enough. I am beautiful the way I am. That is when I started designing my beauty products to find a solution to my skin problem instead of hiding them under layers of makeup and bleached skin.

The products I was making worked. My skin slowly started to heal. My skin wasn’t breaking out as much and the scar was slowly fading. There are different reasons why people suffer from acne-prone skin. I have hormonal acne which means I still get breakouts. The difference is that they are not as bad and my skin doesn’t heal with dark scars anymore. Follow me either on Instagram or Facebook if you don’t mind seeing me showing off my skin when I am stressed now and then lol. The reason I do so is that I want to show other women and men in my situation that having imperfect skin is perfectly normal. My skin is not perfect but I have learned to use the right products to help keep my acne under control, keep my skin moisturise and feeling stunning at the same time.

Makeup is a way that can help boost confidence and bring certain empowerment into someone’s life. It definitely does that for me.

Protest Cardiff Bay Military Medicine Museum.

Cardiff has over the years lost a lot of its heritage, turning into a metropolis dominated by student accommodation and other investment properties.

The multicultural & industrial history of Tigar Bay/Butetown is endlessly fascinating and deserves a permanent tourist attraction.
